Abstract

Image-based research; It is research that visual materials such as photography, film, and video are taken as main sources in social sciences. In the general title of visual studies, researches shaped by macro concepts such as society, culture, and social relations are fed through an interdisciplinary environment. It benefits from the conceptual framework of various disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, media and communication studies, and cultural studies. Visual sociology research is focused on the visual dimensions of social life. It is shaped by theoretical and methodological approaches of sociology and opens the way for understanding the societies with their visual dimensions. In this paper, the general structure of field works carried out with visual sociological approaches will be evaluated. Methodological discussions of using visual materials in field research will be emphasized. Then, photographic research methods, which are frequently used to investigate a particular social area, will be examined through selected examples. In visual studies, photography becomes an increasingly accepted method. On the one hand, photographs are the means of observing the transformation of modern societies and the process of the formation of popular culture. The photographs have specificities in sociological field works for evaluation of the details of the daily life
