Abstract

Orchestra is a unique environment where a musician or musician candidate becomes able to perform music together. Chamber music and orchestra practices are not merely about the solo performance of individuals, but rather collaborative actions. Making music together is paid a specific attention by all institutions which offer music education in Turkey (Conservatories, Departments of Music at the Faculties of Fine Arts, Faculties of Music and Performing Arts, High Schools of Fine Arts, Divisions of Music Education that are affiliated to Faculties of Education, etc.), and is included in all music curriculums. This enables the musicians and music teachers to conduct academic researches on orchestra. Master’s thesis is one of the stages where academic studies are carried out in the field of orchestra. This is a qualitative study, the purpose of which is to analyze the postgraduate theses written in the domain of orchestra. It is based on document analysis method as the research design. A total of 89 theses available on the Thesis Documentation Center of the Higher Education Council with the key word of “orchestra” were included in the study. All accessible theses written from 1999 to 2019 were involved in the research, and they were analyzed according to their universities, years, types, graduate schools/institutes, research methods, data collecting tools, and their subjects. Collected data were analyzed with percentage (%) and frequency (f) method and the results are provided under related tables. In the end of the study, it was concluded that most of these theses were written at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, they were mostly completed in 2016-2018, and that master’s theses constitute the vast majority.
