Abstract

Gothic (supernatural horror) is a genre with its writer and reader in both Turkish and world literature. It is important how original the works of Turkish literature which are given in this field. In this context, it was aimed to follow the traces of the Turkish gothic which developed under the influence of the West through the first novel of Elif Şafak, who is one of the award-winning authors of Turkish literature, Pinhan, which received the Mevlana Literature Prize. When the factors that affect the birth of the genre that emerged in the West in the middle of the 18th century, it is seen that one of these elements are translations from Turkish and Eastern literatures. Therefore, it is understood that the gothic elements specific to our culture have turned into orientalist discourse and took place in the fiction. It is important to determine the current situation and the development of the genre in order to enrich the gothic genre, which is new in Turkish literature compared to the West, with fiction far from orientalist discourse.
