Abstract

Abstract

“Kalın” word, which corresponds to the trousseau in Turkish dialects, is closely related with “Kalı” word. “Kalın” word is referred as carpet within the languages, such as Jagatai and Yakut. As trousseau is composed of long and permanent sets of properties, it became synonymous “Kalı” word within the course of time, and thus, obviously “Kalı”, from “Kalmak” master word in Turkish language, gradually turned into “Halı” (Carpet) form (Öztürk 1992: 93). Halı (Carpet); existed within Central Asia, and is one of the biggest heritages, left to us by nomadic culture. Its journey, which started in the tents, continued on the floors and walls of houses, palaces and mansions with transition to the resident life, and even on the tables as a covering. Carpets are a cultural asset, and naturally it is also loaded with the values of the society, which created it. In other words, carpet became the mirror and language for the society. Techniques and patterns of the carpets have also changed according to the culture, within which they existed. Aim of this article is to study on the relation between carpet and the motif, which is woven onto the carpet.
