Abstract

Chords with non-chord tones (CNTs), which are encountered in many of Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas, are one of the most significant features that form the harmonic language of the composer. However, it is remarkable that no analytical study has been found focusing on the theoretical aspect of the CNTs in the literature. In this study, fifty sonatas (K. 101-150) are analyzed on the basis of CNTs. Including both formulation and categorization of each CNTs, the study has displayed that, these chords can be categorized under three general categories and a non-chord tone is integrated mostly with a dominant chord.
