Abstract

In classical Turkish poetry, love and wine appear as two concepts that are identified with each other. Indeed, love is often dealt with in the context of its similarity to wine or this relationship of similarity is carried even further, and wine is used in place of love through figures of speech. Due to this identicalness of love to wine, many materials used with love are also used with wine, thus forming a common pool of concepts for both love and wine. The horse and its complementary elements are also included in this common pool of concepts. However, the associations and relationships between love/wine and horse appear in a much different and advanced dimension than other elements due to the word “kümeyt,” which means both “a bay” and “dark red wine.” This paper presents an examination of the reasons underlying the associations and relationships established between love/wine and horse in classical Turkish poetry in light of the couplets determined as a result of reviewing separate sâkî-nâmes and dîvâns.
