Abstract

Abstract

The fact that the prevalence of depression is higher in visually impaired individuals than in the general population indicates that this situation increases the risk of depression. A person who is aware of progressive visual acuity loss may have feelings of insecurity, anxiety, loss of independence, and changes in social functioning that lead to depression. Various studies evaluating the relationship between depressive symptoms and the severity of vision loss have yielded inconsistent results. Some showed no association, while others reported higher severity of depression in those with significant vision loss. The general purpose of this article is to determine the prevalence of depression in patients diagnosed with legal blindness in İzmir Yedi Klima Special Eye Care Service between June 2022 and July 2022. The study sample consists of 41 patients. The level of depression was evaluated using the Zung scale and the degree of dependence in activities of daily living was defined using the Barthel index. Data is anonymized for inclusion in a computer database and statistical confidentiality is maintained. Data were analyzed using InfoStat statistical software. The results revealed that there is a relationship between legal blindness, degree of addiction and depressive symptoms in İzmir Yedi Klima Hospital Eye Care Service patients. It is crucial that healthcare professionals are trained to detect the early signs and symptoms of depression and have the necessary tools for such an approach.
