Abstract
Nazar olgusu, birçok toplumda geçmişten günümüze kadar varlığını sürdürmüş bir inanıştır ve bazı kişilerin bakışlarında mevcut olduğuna inanılan olumsuz enerjinin zarar verici etkileriyle ilişkilendirilir. İnsanoğlu bu zarardan korunmak için çeşitli pratikler geliştirmiştir. Ait olunan toplumun inanç ve düşüncesini yansıtan bu pratikler, Anadolu'nun da hemen her bölgesinde çeşitli biçimlerde uygulanmaktadır. Anadolu’nun kadim bölgelerinden Mezopotamya, tarihte pek çok uygarlığa ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Bu durum bölgenin kültürel açıdan zengin olmasını sağlamıştır. Mezopotamya’da bulunan Mardin’in de bu sebeple halk bilimsel varlığında, inanışlarında çeşitlilik ve zenginlik görülmektedir. Bölgede yaşayan farklı etnik ve dini gruplara mensup insanların ortak inançlarından olan nazar bunlardan biridir. Bu çalışmada, Mardin'de nazar inancıyla ilgili yapılan büyüsel uygulamalar ve bunların işlevlerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla yörede yaşayan farklı din ve etnik kökene sahip kaynak kişilerle görüşülmüştür. Kültürel açıdan çok yönlü olan şehirde, nazar inancı ritüellerinin işlevleri William Bascom'un işlev teorisine göre incelenmiştir.

Abstract
The evil eye phenomenon is a belief that has existed in many societies from the past to the present and is associated with the damaging effects of the negative energy believed to exist in the gaze of some people. Mankind has developed various practices to protect itself from this harm. These practices, which reflect the belief and thought of the society to which they belong, are practiced in various forms in almost every region of Anatolia. Mesopotamia, one of the ancient regions of Anatolia, has hosted many civilizations in history. This has made the region rich in terms of culture. For this reason, diversity and richness can be seen in the folklore and beliefs of Mardin, which is located in Mesopotamia. Evil eye, which is one of the common beliefs of people belonging to different ethnic and religious groups living in the region, is one of them. In this study, it is aimed to determine the magical practices related to the evil eye belief and their functions in Mardin. For this purpose, resource people from different religions and ethnicities living in the region were interviewed. In the culturally versatile city, the functions of the evil eye rituals were studied according to William Bascom's theory of function.
