1929 BÜYÜK BUHRANI SÜRECİNDE TÜRKİYE EKONOMİSİNİN AMERIKAN VE TÜRK BASININDAKİ TEMSİLİ: NEW YORK TIMES VE CUMHURİYET GAZETESİ ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract
Bu çalışma, 1929 Büyük Buhranı’nın patlak vermesiyle birlikte dünya genelinde derin etkiler yaratan ekonomik kriz sürecini ele almaktadır. Söz konusu ekonomik sıkıntılar, buhranın ortaya çıktığı ülke olan Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ile henüz yeni kurulmuş, genç ancak dinamik bir devlet olan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti perspektifinden analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada, Amerikan basınını temsilen The New York Times’ta yayımlanan haberler ile Türk basınında önemli bir yere sahip olan Cumhuriyet gazetesinde yer alan haberler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Nitel analiz yöntemi ile gerçekleştirilen inleme, krizin Türkiye Cumhuriyeti açısından basın dili aracığıyla nasıl anlamlandırıldığı ve bu anlamlandırılmanın Amerikan basını açısından nasıl görüldüğü saptanmıştır. Basın söyleminin analizi, New York Times’ın Türkiye ekonomisini ağırlıklı olarak dış borçlar, bütçe dengesi ve uluslararası finans sistemi bağlamında ele aldığını; Cumhuriyet gazetesinin ise krizi tasarruf, devlet müdahalesi ve planlama söylemleri üzerinden ele aldığını göstermektedir.

Abstract
This study examines the economic difficulties experienced following the outbreak of the 1929 Great Depression, which created profound effects all over the world. These economic difficulties are analyzed from the perspectives of the United States, where the depression first emerged, and the Republic of Turkey, which can be considered a newly established yet young and dynamic state at the time. The research comparatively examines news articles published in The New York Times, a long-established and influential newspaper in the United States, and those published in Cumhuriyet, a newspaper holding an important position in the Turkish press. The analysis, conducted using a qualitative method, determines how the crisis was interpreted through the language of the press from the perspective of the Republic of Turkey and how this interpretation was perceived within the American press. The analysis of press discourse demonstrates that The New York Times addressed the Turkish economy primarily within the context of foreign debts, budget balance, and the international financial system, whereas Cumhuriyet approached the crisis through discourses of thrift, state intervention, and economic planning.
