Abstract

Scripts such as Textura, Schwabacher, Rotunda and Fraktur are called as "Gothic scripts". Gothic scripts are the most widely used handwriting in Medieval Central Europe. They have become the first typefaces in typography due to the letters were adopted and used by Gutenberg for the first print in the printing press invented by him. In literature research there have seen no problem about the naming and classification of Gothic handwriting but there have seen issues and differences in naming and classification of many of the Gothic typefaces that were imported from the original handwritten versions. It is identified that issues and differences in foreign sources have been reflected exponentially to the Turkish sources by translations and these are discussed as the research problems. Findings and information from both Turkish and English sources about the naming, classification and usage of the gothic types in graphic design, has reviewed and discussed in line of the problems and objectives of the research.
