Abstract

In this study, with the help of compiled samples of Historical Van Houses, it is aimed to examine the materials in the construction of Historical Van Houses which are not being built in traditional architectural way anymore. Adobe which has been the main construction material being used since the Neolithic Age till now, especially in continental climate regions in Anatolia, has been used in Historical Van Houses as well. Van Houses are very important part of traditional architecture of Van. These houses have been made of adobe and plastered by a strawy clay on a stone foundation. These houses have a flat soil roof supported by wood uprights and they have been built mostly as two flats and bay window. However, they are disappearing one by one because of some reasons stem from both nature and human beings. On behalf of interaction, innovation and modernism , they have given place to new multiple storied concrete houses which are designed as a result of affectation. They are not suitable for the social structure and climate conditions and many kind of plans and construction materials started to be used in these buildings.
