Abstract

One of the most important philosophers in 20th century is Thomas Nagel. Nagel, influenced by Kant, wants to develop a ethical theory which is objective and universal. Nagel defended altruism thought in moral philosophy. Altruism holds that the reasons and motives of the moral acts arise from others people interest not self interest. Nagel examine the thought of altruism, which is the opposite of egoism in moral philosophy, especiallly in his book "The Possibility of Altruism". In this book Nagel holds that altruism is possible only by three steps. Theese steps are objective reasons, moral principle and impersonal standpoint.
