The food labels include information facilitating the selection of reliable and healthy food. Therefore, it is important that the food labels are read and used by the consumers. This study has been planned and carried out with the purpose of determining the consumer status of reading label information and some factors affecting this and the consumer preferences about the place of label information on the package. 550 students studying in Gazi University has participated in the study. 69.3 % of the students are girls and 50.5% has studied nutrition. It is determined that 28.5% of the consumers always read the labels and 68.7% sometimes read. The reasons for not reading the label information include; lack of time, smallness and complexity of scripts and difficulty in finding the place of information. Consumers have mostly requested the name of the product, manufacture and expiry date information to be located on the front face of the package and information such as name of manufacturer, address, contents section, nutritional value and amount of food at the rear side. The points that the students who studied nutrition have obtained from their attitudes and behaivours for using the labels are confirmed to be higher than the students’ who have not studied nutrition (p=0.006).
