Abstract

Nausea is a philosophical novel by the existentialist philosopher J. P. Sartre, published in 1938. It is Sartre's first novel and one of his best works. Antoine Roquentin, the protagonist of the novel,is a former adventurer who has been living in Bouville for three years. The main theme of the novel, as the title indicates, is that Roquentin keeps experiencing nausea as he picks up or perceives objects in the world: Roquentin's problem is not simply depression or mental illness, although his experience has pushed him to that point. Sartre presents Roquentin's difficulties as arising from man's inherent existential condition. In Nausea is empasized that life is meaningless unless a person makes personal commitments that give it meaning.
