Abstract

A. S. Byatt is one of the most controversial writers in the postmodern period of English literature. Her place in the literary canon is an issue of great debate and conflict. She is located as a postmodern writer although her writings bear different characteristics from those of other postmodernist writers. Considering her writing style, this article will problematize’s Byatt’s complicated position in the literary canon and unearth her playing around with the conventions of various genres. Possession: A Romance (1990), by A.S.Byatt, is indeed a romance, but also a mystery, a satire, a detective story and a fairy tale, and both a historical and contemporary work of fiction. It is a truly complex, intricate and multilayered novel both in terms of its structure and themes. In this respect, Possession will be analyzed as a postmodern detective novel which deals with the relation between reality and fictionality, boundaries of the past and the present, and how these bounadaries are constructed and deconstructed in postmodern detective fictional narrative.
