Abstract

Today's business firms need staff who has the proper qualities to meet their business needs in order to get a competitive advantage against its rivals, to be successful and to work efficiently. The staff who has knowledge, skills and experience as well as material resources can directly affect the success of the company. What is important here is to be able to accommodate staff competencies to the goals of the business corporation and benefit from the staff competencies effectively and efficiently. Therefore, business firms have focused on competency-based staff selection activities. The purpose of this study is to determine the methods that the firms from different sectors use in selecting competency-based personnel and to determine whether these methods differ. In this context, the data gathered from 42 firms which operates in the city center of Sivas was evaluated using face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. As a result of this study, it has been determined that the methods used for the selection of competency-based personnel differ depending on the sector in which the firm operates, the position of the staff to be hired and whether the firm has a training program for its employees.
