Abstract

Television is an important tool of both entertainment and learning for children (Bayındır, 2015). Animated cartoons that are prepared on television for children also present many concepts to children and subjects and their presentation way children. Thus, children are able to associate the new knowledge they learn everyday with previous learnt concepts. Concept is the expression of common traits of similar or different objects and events with a word or a name (Çeliköz, 1998). Concept settlement in children is a very slow and difficult process. It is the formation of a group by objects in mind based on the similarities of properties and thoughts (Bütün Ayhan and Aral, 2007). The process of concept development for children is examined in four stages as; grouping, generalization, classification, and concept learning. In the stage of grouping, children group in their opinion according to their developmental levels, which generally occurs as a result of children’s own observations rather than the effort of adults to attract the attention of children to a category. The stage of generalization could be defined as transferring concepts or principles to new conditions. The ability of transferring develops as individuals face new conditions. The stage of classification is the most difficult process and it generally starts at the end of the preschool period (Arı, Üstün and Akman, 1995; Kol, 2012). Accordingly, it was aimed to examine the concepts in the animated cartoon Pepee, which is a local production. The population of the study consisted of 52 episodes of the animated cartoon Pepee that were broadcasted in 2015. The acquired data were analyzed by using the QSR NVivo 10 computer software, which is compatible with qualitative data analysis. The content analysis technique was used in the analyses. Consequently, in the animated cartoon PEPEE, it was observed that dimension (32), shape (30), quantity (43), number (31), time (36), space (36), direction (30), sensation (32), color (48), feelings (107) and some other concepts (78) that could be studied with children were preferred.
