THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ALEXITIMIA AND SELF-ESTEEM OF HIGH SCHOOLER

Abstract

It is known that emotional intelligence, alexithymia and eslf-esteem are important parameters affecting life quality, social welfare and academic success. The study aims to evaluate the relationship between the emotional intelligence and the factors effecting its development , alexithymia and self-esteem in high school students. Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale, Rosenberg self-esteem Scale and Personal information form are administered to the 652 high school students in Istanbul. The relations between the scales was evaluated by correlation analysis, and the Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney's were used to analyse the others relationships. The sex distribution of the participants is similar (50.8% female, 49.2 male). The relation between the average emotional intelligence score and sex, academic achievement and getting off with peer was significant (p<0,05). The sibling number, father education and psycotherapy related to the alexityhmia score of participant (p<0,05). Of 51,2% participants who had low score on the emotional intelligence scale were alexithymic, on the other hand 56,7% of participants with high score on the scale of emotional intelligence had high self-esteem (p<0,05). Conclusions: Emotional intellegence of the students are corraleted with their academic achievement and self-esteem. The students who are proned to alexithmia had low emotional intelligence score.
