Abstract

The word instrument describes all kinds of objects that are used to make music, natural or manufactured and make sound. While studying the cultural and musical lifestyles of the societies, the instrument is one of the most important milestones that must be studied; especially in folk music, they are often seen to be associated with the region. For example; The Eastern Black Sea Region is almost identical to the kemençe and The Aegean region to sipsi. This situation does not change abroad. When Azerbaijan is mentioned, the instrument that comes to mind first is tar and when it is called Scotland it becomes bagpipe. In Turkey, tırnak kemane that is played in Kastamonu, Zonguldak and Bartın becomes a representative of the area. This instrument is the great form of the kemençe played in the Turkish Maqam Music by means of the nail contact with the strings; here the forms used in the Balkan Folk Music come to mind. The tırnak kemane show similar features in terms of technique, form and music type performed with the Greek islands and lyra of Crete and gadulka of Bulgaria. While the only instrument that is played in Turkish Music and the geography of Turkey with a nail contact is known as kemençe, the people who know and recognize the tırnak kemane which have the same form and technique except the local people are partially minority. In this article, tırnak kemane will be examined by taking into consideration local folklore as an item and performance technique and local folk music accompanied by it and its representative characteristic will be evaluated.
