ATTITUDES AND VIEWS OF STUDENTS RECEIVING EDUCATION AT THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES REGARDING THE HYMEN EXAMINATION (VIRGINITY CONTROL) AND THE CONCEPT OF CHASTITY

Abstract

This study aims to determine the attitudes and views of students receiving education at the faculty of health sciences regarding the hymen examination and the concept of chastity. It is a descriptive study. The target population of the study consisted of totally 1765, students receiving education in the departments of midwifery, nursing, social service, health management and child development at Faculty of Health Sciences. The data were collected from 854 student who accepted to participate in the study between 07.12.2013–20.02.2014. In our study, there is a significant difference between the statement, “women have a voice on their own bodies” and the gender, family structure, and the educational level of parents (p<0.05). The difference between the statement,“I am concerned about the virginity of the person I marry” and the gender and classes is significant, as well (p<0.05). And, there is a significant difference between the statement, “Honour killings that are performed for a woman who has lost her virginity are correct” and the gender and family structure (p<0.05). As a result of our study, we observed a higher traditional way of thinking in male students compared to female students, first graders compared to senior classes, those with a lower level of income compared to those with a higher level of income, those with extended families compared to those with nuclear families, and those with lower educational levels of parents compared to those with higher educational levels of parents.
