Abstract

The aim of this study is to measure the interest, skill and usage levels of the students studying at Bingöl University Vocational School of Social Sciences in the 2015-2016 academic year in the context of increasing media literacy. For this purpose, it was tried to determine the students' frequency of using the internet, daily television watching, newspaper and book reading hours, the programs that they watched most on television and their expectations from these programs. 421 students studying at different departments of Bingöl University Vocational School of Social Sciences have participated in the study. The data in the study were obtained by the questionnaire prepared by the researcher. In the analysis of the data, SPSS 16 program was used. The findings show that the students prefer to hang out on the internet instead of watching TV, are most influenced by 'daily news' in the media, while they are most influenced by the media when purchasing 'books, music, game CDs'. Students also believe that messages in the media are generally "organized". Finally, it turns out in the findings that media literacy is "important".
