Abstract

The ancient city of Cyzicus is a Miletos colony and Propontis (Sea of Marmara) is built on a peninsula. Due to its strategic importance and its reputation in trade, it has been a remarkable city in every period. Between the Athens and Sparta fights, the city has suffered from time to time. The Cyzicus Naval War is one of these troubles. Cyzicus, a member of the Delos Union of Athens, has been separated from many cities. Kyzikos had close relations with Sparta. Kyzikos was in a position where Athens could prevent the Black Sea trade. All of this posed a threat to Athens. For these reasons, Athens has waged war against the Cyzicus city, which received support from the Spartans. In 410 BC. the battle took place in Alkibiades, the commander of the Athens fleet, and the commander of the Spartan navy was Mindaros. Athens won the Battle of Cyzicus during the Peloponnesian Wars. Thus, Cyzicus was again dominated by Athens. In this study, the reasons for the Kyzikos naval war, the events in the war, the strategy of war and the results of the war for Kyzikos and Athens will be evaluated.
