Abstract

Contemporary “virtue ethics” debates have become increasingly popular in recent years. Some philosophers take classical virtue ethics that lives in Greek culture as a guide and refer to it in the sense of understanding present-day problems. For example, A. MacIntyre, one of the leading virtue ethicists, does this and goes to Aristotle to try to identify some important problems of moral philosophy of our day. According to him, Aristotle stands as the greatest representative of classical tradition, against modern culture and morality because while classical moral philosophy, is considered social relations as essential, modern moral philosophy gives priority to individual and individual’s choice. On the basis of this distinction, MacIntyre states that Kierkegaard maintains the conception of the individual of modern morality tradition. However, some Kierkegaardians do not participate in this reading of MacIntyre; they even claim that Kierkegaard can be regarded as a virtue ethicist. In this paper, we aim specifically to understand and analyse this claim.
