Abstract

Poetry is among the compulsory course content to be taught in every theme in primary school Turkish courses. Student workbooks involve various activities regarding the poetry texts given in the main books. This study aims to investigate the activities related to poetry in student workbooks of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade (primary school) Turkish language course. Three workbooks being one published by Ministry and two published by private publishing houses were taken into consideration from each grade level; a total of nine workbooks were investigated. The research was conducted through document review which is a quantitative research method. In this research, activities regarding poetry were investigated by number and variety of the activities based on grades and workbooks. Poetry activities were categorized under three titles being activities towards producing, activities towards analyzing and activities towards assessing. According to the research findings, it was found that poetry activities generally increase by grade levels; activities towards analyzing take more place in books; vocabulary activities, writing poem, answering questions related to the content of given poem, interpreting activities on the read/heard poem are frequently used.
