Abstract

Tourism, which is defined by the United Nations as one of ten sectors that are effective in the creation of green economy, has an important place in decreasing poverty via employment opportunities and providing rural development. The sustainable use of natural and cultural resources, which are the main resources of tourism, is a prerequisite for both economic and social sustainability. Sustainable tourism types are becoming increasingly important in this framework. Agrotourism, which can be defined as the in-situ experience of local agricultural products, activities and lifestyles, is at the forefront of tourism types that promote rural development today. In Turkey, where rural settlement areas are abandoned, agricultural lands, rural resources, values and heritage are lost because of increase in migration from towns to urban areas; agrotourism is amongst the tourism types that support the rural development. Within this framework, a scientific research project has been carried out at Anadolu University aiming to evaluate the opportunities of agrotourism within İzmir-Karaburun case. In this paper, the role of agrotourism in rural development will be discussed and the project will be briefly introduced.
