Abstract

During the election periods, it is observed that governments have intervened in some macroeconomic variables by following populist policies in order to be re-elected. This issue, known as political conjuncture theories, has been a rich literature, especially since the 1970s. Some of the studies in the literature also show that political conjuncture theories are valid for Turkey; Others show that this effect is not clear. In this study, the elections in Turkey and the periods in which government changes took place, economic growth and inflation as policy output. EKK method was used as econometric analysis. According to the results obtained, the elections and the government changes in Turkey in the period of 1980-2016 have no meaningful effect on the mentioned variables. For the development of this study, the modeling power of the model can be increased by including the analysis of different variables affecting policy outputs.
