Abstract

Intellectuals are useful to and lead their societies and all humanity with their knowledge, good manners and experience, unlike ordinary people. They also actively or passively direct individuals’ and societies’ lives and shape the future with their distinguishing characteristics. The 1950s were a critical period in determining the future of Cyprus. The principle of self-determination gained importance in this period under the effects of international developments and the environment, and the Turkish government, being at the top of the decision-making process, had to determine a new strategic and humanistic policy about Cyprus, which had not been on its agenda since 1923. Nihat Erim played a crucial role in the Cyprus policy, finalized by the government, with his specialty in international law as an intellectual. This study examines Nihat Erim’s important analyses and evaluations about Cyprus in this period. It verifies that Erim’s legal analyses determined the policy to be pursued by the government about Cyprus and played an important role in the adoption of the Taksim thesis. It also briefly addresses his general evaluations about Cyprus in order to highlight his multi-dimensional qualifications, as well as his international law analyses that directed the government’s Cyprus policies. Erim’s book about Cyprus, primary and secondary resources and archive documents were used in the study.
