Abstract

Oaths in the Turkish culture were typically taken upon objects and concepts which were important to individuals and society. One of these objects were animals. The Turks took oaths upon animals that were valuable to themselves or were considered taboos at times when the ancient Turkish belief system was prevalent. Thus they used animals as a foundation. If the oath became a lie or not kept, they feared that the animal could be lost or it could harm them. For the Turks who adopted a horse-nomad life style in the earlier periods, the horse became one of the most valuable and irreplaceable notions of everyday life. Our study will focus on the horse which took an important place in the Turkish cultural life and the oaths taken upon. This way, we will try to expose the importance of oaths and the horse considered sacred for the society throughout the Turkish cultural life.
