Abstract

The Ahıska Turks have been forced to live in separate countries because of exile and compulsory migration, leaving their countries, relatives, spouses and children behind. Life where they settled was not easy for them. But today, apart from each other in different geographies of the world, Turkish identities, family solidarity and traditions that they were trying to protect, were kept them alive. In this study, the wedding ceremonies of the Ahıska Turks settled in Honaz district of Denizli in different time periods were discussed. In the wedding ceremonies of Ahiska Turks that live in Honaz; Traditions like, covering the bride head with the traditional "leçeg and naznazi", availability of "tamada" at the ceremony, tying a bread to bride’s belly, “getting wishes” by bride as a respect display, are still continued. Similarities between wedding ceremonies of Ahiska Turks live in different countries of the world and Ahiska Turks live in Honaz were identifed. Starting this point of view, it is possible to say that although the Ahıska Turks live in different places, different societies and different cultures, they did not lose their Turkish identity and still tried to sustain their culture and traditions within the possibilities.
