Abstract

The only remaining work of Ibn al-Fariz, a sufi poet of Arabic literature, according to the sources, is his Diwan. From his Diwan, Kaside-i Hamriyye, also known as Kaside-i Mimiyye because it was written according to “mim (Arabic letter ‘m’) rhyme, is a poem subjecting divine love through the “wine” metaphor. This qasida has been translated from Arabic into Persian and Turkish by many scholars who also have interpreted it. One of the interpreters of Kasîde-i Hamriyye in Turkish was Abdussalam b. Nu’man b. Halil who lived circa 1580. According to the sources, Abdussalam b. Nu'man b. Halil's interpretation was the first Turkish expound on Kasîde-i Hamriyye. Abdussalam b. Nu'man b. Halil interpreted the qasida verse by verse. In his work, first he gave the verses in the original language, and then explained the words in every verse. In the next step he analyzed the verses according to grammar and syntax. Finally, he interpreted each verse in Turkish according to tasawwuf by citing “muhassal-i kelâm ve me’âl-i merâm dimek oldı ki”. This study informs the reader about the life and works of Ibn al-Fariz, and introduces the translations and interpretations of Kaside-i Hamriyye. The second part of our study involves Abdussalam b. Nu'man b. Halil's the original manuscripts of interpretation of the qasida. His interpretation method is also analysed in the latter parts of our study. how a commentary method is followed in this work. The comparison of two different manuscripts of Abdussalam b. Nu'man b. Halil’s interpretation is added to the end of our study with transcription.
