Abstract

New tendencies and methods on teaching foreign language shaped recently. One of these is the method of “teaching through drama”. As it is well known, living experience is the essential provision for learning. Therefore, it is important to bring the students in experience in order to provide an effective learning. Hence, experience is in the foreground in drama. In this study, the influence of drama on learning a target language has been investigated. Drama can be effectively used to bring the students in cultural factors in the target culture, or for cultural transmission, grammar lessons, learning words, improving the skills of reading and speaking, and literature classes. The act can be a literary text, story, dialogue, or an authentic text provided by a teacher, as well as an act that the students fictionalize themselves. The students learn the target language by utilizing the lesson process entertainingly with this method. It contributes to improve the student’s aesthetic and artistic respect, the ability of empathy, and creativity. The students improve their ability on team work, and gain social sensitivity. They learn how to use the body language. Also, this method encourages the students to spend more time other than the limited lesson process, since the drama requires a detailed preliminary preparation for a foreign language.
