Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine how the failure to include the Turkish World topic in the social sciences curriculum will affect students' foreign policy knowledge. The aim of the study is to determine what the academicians' views are about the topic. In terms of enabling an in-depth study in the research, case studies (phenomenology) are used as qualitative research methods. The research was conducted using collection tool, interview. Easy reachable case sampling method was used in the research. The sample of the research is composed of three teaching staff who are working in the Department of Social Studies Teacher Education in Amasya University in 2015-2016. Semi-structured talks were held with the teaching staff working at Amasya University. As a result of the research, it has been seen that there is an acquirement in the sixth grade curriculum related to the Turkish world, but in the seventh and eighth grade curriculum there is acquirement on this subject. In this sense, the necessity of having the Turkish World topic in the eighth grade social studies curriculum was understood as the result of the interviews. Another result of the research is that the Turkish world is not well recognized and the connection with the Turkish world is not well known. It has also been shown that there are not enough infrastructures about the topic. Findings show that this could lead to various problems in the social studies lessons about Turkish World topic. From these findings it is envisaged that these students will have sufficient equipments related to the Turkish World and that the tendencies towards the Turkish World, where we have organic ties, will be superficial and inadequate. A similar study can be done with other stakeholders in education. It is expected that the information and findings that will come out as a result of this study will serve as an example for the Turkish world and to be the source of such studies to be carried out in the future.
