Abstract

Humour is an important element that may differentiate, in other words, vary in terms of its social-economic cultural aspects, just like in all other elements of the society. We can get an opinion about the cultural texture of a society by looking at humour culture, movies, such as humour in Turkish Cinema: “Recep Ivedik” movies and tradition of that society. When we adopt an approach based on the cultural structure of our society and consider our humour tradition, we encounter with a setting that ranges from “public storytelling” (meddah) to “Hacivat and Karagöz”. While our humour tradition is fed by satire, it will not be wrong to say that it is deprived of an advanced level of criticism. In fact, cultural humour understanding in an advanced cultural formation will, too, be advanced without any need for a force as a criterion of this. In this study, it will be our primary objective to critically scrutinize “Recep Ivedik” movie series, which addresses a great audience outdistancing any kinds of comedy movies from the beginning of Turkish cinema and has broken all rating records surprisingly, by considering the fact that cinema, as the seventh art, is the mirror of the society. In addition to that, we will show that “Recep Ivedik” series is deprived of criticism and does not have an advanced level of humour understanding and it does not go beyond mocking and being mocked and making ordinary people laughing at ordinary people.
