INVESTIGATION OF MUSICAL LITERACY LEVELS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATE STUDENTS: THE CASE OF KOCAELİ PROVINCE

Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the music literacy of secondary school graduates and to examine their relation with different variables (gender, high school type, getting private music lessons out of school, playing musical instrument, benefiting from music lessons, being satisfied with music teachers). In the study, a comparison type relational research model was used. The sample of the study consisted of 363 students, 176 of whom were female and 187 were male, from the 9th grade of 8 high schools selected from the provinces of Kocaeli, Izmit and Gebze. Marmara Music Literacy Test was used as data collection tool in the research. Some of the main results of the research are as follows: (1) The music literacy levels of secondary school graduates are low; (2) Female students’ music literacy levels are higher than male students; (3) Science high school students’ music literacy levels are higher than the students of Anatolian High Schools and Vocational High Schools; (4) Music literacy levels of students having private music lessons/courses as out of school activities are higher than having no private music lessons; (5) Music literacy levels of students playing an instrument are higher than the students who do not play any instrument.
