Abstract

Elected memberships at the national level participate in political groups on the unique supranational parliament, namely European Parliament. Political groups consist of alliances of political parties or political parties reflecting the differences among various political and ideological tendencies in political systems of membership countries. Two kinds of groups exist by gathering parliament memberships of different political groups in parliament. One of these groups is political committies having formal status and power and these committies are parliament organisation. The other groups are called as intergroups which take attention as efficient actors in decision-making processes and supported by parliament but not have either formal status or power. Intergroups are generated by parliament memberships of different political groups in order to improve interests in specific issues, bring up these interests to the agenda of parliament and provide to determination of policies in these issues. These groups being regenerated in each parliament term, operate in various fields and also strengthen with extra-parliamentary interactions. This study deals with features and development process of intergroups. The aims of intergroups being currently active in parliament, their multi-pronged interaction processes and their operation cases are also examined.
