Abstract

In today's world, where information and communication have changed at a dizzying pace, knowledge and the knowledge struggle, and the search for new information, the nation's survival and management of information technology are directly linked to the time the society devotes to reading. Unfortunately, the rate of reading is decreasing day by day in our society, which is the generation of a generation that has built up a large number of libraries that have spent a lot of time reading in the past civilizations and have thousands of manuscripts, and our people are getting more of a watching society than reading them. A society must first be the most educated, unrestrained educators who allocate a certain amount of resources regularly from the budget to buy books. In this context, giving reading habits to university students is at least as important as having the level of knowledge required in the field of specialization in which they are studying. In this study, it was tried to show the importance of reading habits and reading by the university students in the condition of being prospective teachers. The student's universe constitutes the students of the Department of Social Studies Teacher Education who are studying at the Amasya University Faculty of Education. A total of 166 students studying at different gender and class levels participated voluntarily and answered questionnaires. 105 students (63.3%) were female and 61 (36.7%) were male students. 48.2% of the students who participated in the survey during the last year stated that they read at least 1, at most 5 books; 28,3% of the students read 6-10, 12,7% read 11-20, 7,8% read 20 books and 1,8% of the students never read books. Taking into consideration the number of books read in the last 1 year, it seems that the situation is not innocent on behalf of the students who are candidate teachers
