Abstract

The needs of the consumer market, an extension of the reality of a market economy, are constantly changing. Every professional institution that inevitably evolves in line with country and market requirements provides in house training or on the job training in order to keep up with the changes and developments on the market. In order to meet the needs of new markets many university departments restructure their curriculum, in other words reassess and redesign their courses. In the technological and globalized world, audiovisual products which are aired almost simultaneously in many countries have led to an increase in the number of individuals required to work in the audiovisual translation (AVT) market and this in turn has led to an increase in the need for training in AVT. Thus, especially in universities that prioritize the updating of courses according to market requirements and trends, the demand for courses in AVT has also multiplied. This demand inevitably leads to the renewal of the curriculum or the addition of new courses in many T&I Departments core or elective course lists. The following study which concentrates on this phenomenon provides research and data to support this new trend and underlines the importance of embracing a multidisciplinary approach in training. In order to prepare a background and underline the framework for the recent developments, the following section provides a short background on the history of AVT in Turkey and in direct correlation with this explains the necessity of initiating innovative and creative AVT courses in order to support creative AVT practices and products. The article underlines the importance of the fact that the future of AVT lies in the hands of young and upcoming audiovisual translators and the extent to which they will nurture their creativity during their training.
