The area of Kocaeli is 3626 km² and it is the 5 % of total area of Turkey. The settlement is about 4, 23 % of the total area of Kocaeli. According to population, Kocaeli is one most important city in Turkey. Population at the city with metropolitan area is 1.830.772. The 46 % of the population are the people who come as the result of the migration to the city. There 12 municipalities in province and 245 villages in the metropolitan area. One of them İzmit is the center of the city. The growth of the settlement of İzmit has been observed in two main time period; one of them is the period of pre republic of Turkey, also the period of Ottoman Empire and the republic period. İzmit is a living laboratory for the settlement researchers, because it is possible to see housing from different periods. In this study, the effects of housing development and urban settlement before and after the 1999 earthquake in the central province of Izmit, Kocaeli province are examined.},author={Deniz DEMİRARSLAN},year={2018},journal={The Journal of Social Sciences}}
