In our traditions, first letters of people’s names had been fretted on the edges of handkerchiefs. Humans have used signatures, signs, writings, and symbols in order to own and immortalize their property. Exlibris is a work of art that appeared with such an aim. Exlibris’ not being an ordinary seal, a signature or a piece of evidence has increased its functionality. Exlibrises are possession labels. Exlibris is the label of the person possessing it, rather than being that of the book, onto or within which it has been attached. In the literal sense, it means the book of “…”, belongs to “…”s library, or from “…”s library. In Exlibris, little, visual compositions also take place besides the writing. Exlibris is distinguished from the other visual arts by the use of typography. What makes Exlibris special is its being prepared only for the person possessing it and its not being repeated. Even if the same book is published again and again, the one carrying an Exlibris has the characteristic to be unique. Exlibrises are original works with aesthetical values. As a thing enabling people to privatize their belongingness, Exlibris’ being designed with an aesthetical concern, its becoming a passion and its being perceived as an art object; beginning of gradual increase in the number of people interested in Exlibris are all indicators of the fact that its design had accomplished its objective.},author={Hatice Nilüfer SÜZEN},year={2018},journal={The Journal of Social Sciences}}
