Abstract

The Classical Turkish Poetry prevails for about six centuries in the history of the Turkish Literature and yields literary personalities and works, and it is not limited to Asia Minor only but also it develops in a wide geography. It first connotates the Balkan region, which is a literary and cultural centre with its poets, munshis and men of literature. Classical Turkish poets use many elements such as Kur’ân-ı Kerîm, history of religions and prophets, hadiths, astronomy, astrology, etc. Toponyms are one of the elements. In this context, poets give place to mythological and legendary names of country, city, river, according to the literary tradition. They also consider, in their poems, the geographical toponyms in real life. The Balkans are one of the settings. It is our aim, in this presentation, to draw attention to how the names of river, castle, city, etc. are considered in terms of figures of speech such as similes.
