Abstract

In Turkey Tourism education is given including high school, associate degree and undergraduate. In many of these educational institutions internship application is compulsory for students’ better understanding of the theoretical information which is given in school. The students are expected to develop themselves in professional tourism management by working as an intern for a certain period of time. The compulsory internship which is generally performed in summer that is busy working time for sector is aimed the students to know the sector, to practice their theoretical information and to develop their foreign language. But this aim is generally not gained. The loyalty of students to tourism profession is diminishing due to some problems such as structural problems in sector, heavy working conditions, and workload because of seasonal work, inconsiderate and uneducated permanent staff. Students generally do not work on their educational field after graduate by facing these problems with compulsory internship. Thus all education efforts go down the drain. In addition to this tourism sector lacks of these qualified and educated manpower. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of compulsory internship on students’ loyalty of their profession. For this purpose, data collected from a group of tourism students through a survey. As a result of research has been found a significant relationship between whether students have done internship or have not done yet and professional commitment. Average of professional commitment of the students who have done internship is lower than the students who have not done internship yet. In addition to this results there is significant relationship between professional commitment and department that student has done internship. This aim is very important both educational institutions and the sector.
