Abstract

The effects of nihilism, philosophy of evil, existential dilemmas that the second world war has made widespread all over the world has considerable impact on the Turkish intellectuals who have perceived themselves in the middle of an endless nihilism and pessimism. It is possible to traces the impacts of J.P. Sartre, A. Camus, F. Nietzsche, M. Heidegger, Dostoyevsky and Kafka in several Turkish novels. This paper restricts the reflection styles of such impacts only with the novels titled The Devil Within Us, The Man In The Street, Idle Man, Those Who Can Not Sustain and Dangerous Plays. It is possible to see the traces of Turkish intellectuals who perceived the fall with existential nausea, who have lost their trust to the universe and the mankind, the traces of their problematic regarding their inability to sustain to the universe. Ömer, who talks with the sound of darkness inside him in his novel titled The Devil Within Us, Hasan who finds the darkness within him in the darkness of the street in the novel of Atilla Ilhan titled The Man in the Street are the novels where the inability to sustain problematic is not specifically mentioned but the traces of inability to sustain is perceived deep at the heart of said novels. The traces of inability to sustain can be followed in the reflection types of the crises that are mentioned in said novels. Whereas, Yusuf Atılgan has for the first time named the problem as inability to sustain in his novel titled The Idle Man. Hence for Yusuf Atılgan, the name of said crises is dis-sustainment. The dissustainment problem of Mr. C. was associated with another name in the novel of Oğuz Atay. This dissustainment problem which appeared in the novel titled The Idle Man in 1959 was later named in the Novel of Oğuz Atay as Those who can not sustain in 1979. Oğuz Atay has depicted the crises of the intellectual who can not sustain in deeper form in his novels titled Those who can not sustain and Dangerous Plays. The objective of our thesis is to review the problem of inability to sustain and to investigate this problem in connection with the author-narrator-hero setup of said novels.
