Abstract

The traditional art of hand weaving, once a profitable and prolific enterprise, existing to meet the demands of the native, local populations later became a thing of the past, slowly losing it’s importance, with it’s production rapidly decreasing. This decrease has resulted in the adoption of machine weaving which is cheaper, considering the expensive nature of the cloth material itself. So, the traditional hand weaved cloths with their regional characteristics are now being manufactured for different markets, well outside of their original, intented usages and purposes. In this respect, the old, traditional weaving samples differ quite a lot from the contemporary, modern ones in many different aspects. A good example of this difference, this deviation are the cloth weaving produce in the Kızılcabölük, Babadağ and Buldan townships in Denizli region, which is one of the most important weawing-textile centers of the Aegan section of Turkey. But it’s only in Tavas district that the Nikfer cloths are stil being manufactured,, using the old hand weaving techniques by one single weaver and still within the traditional usage purpose. In the article, the technique, raw materials and the fields of usage of the traditional Nikfer cloth, will be introduced. Aside of this; it’s loss of appeal, diminishing market value, the loss of support for it’s manufacture and the ways to rejuvenate this now declining form of traditional hand weaving will be discussed. Different solutions to re-start it’s traditional manufacture, using different production techniques in more varied areas of consumption will be proposed as a conclusion.
