Abstract

In the 18th century, Europe was the scene of dynamic changes that started a new social and economic period under the influence of new ideals and inventions. This changes has manifested itself in the design of textiles and clothes, especially in art and resulted in the consisting of a new bourgeois fashion. Due to the economic growth of the bourgeois class, their desire to resemble the aristocratic class, and the developments in the silk weaving technology, three-dimension effective large patterns and bright colours dominated textile products until the last quarter of the century. After the 1780s, the patterns reduced to linear forms with the effect of neoclassicism and the floral patterns disappeared, and the colours became simpler and turned into pastel tones. By means of the production increase of printed fabrics, a textile market has been formed which can be accessed by middle and lower class inexpensively. In this period, Bourgeois tastes attract attention to women's clothing preferences, while the silhouettes of the clothes have reduced, while the short jackets have become fashionable, the use of single-piece clothes has decreased and even ended. In addition to this, while the mantua-style garments were changing in the way that the petticoats were visible, the sack back gowns were popular in the 18th century as a new garment form. In this study, it aimed displaying the role of fashion in the social changes as a form of social expression through the social and economic changes that took place in Europe in the 18th century.
