Abstract

The question of how to raise a citizen in a country is the point of action in creating the purpose and content of citizenship education. Citizenship education can be given in all courses with an independent or interdisciplinary approach from primary education. Moreover certain courses related to social sciences such as history and geography can also play a key role in educating citizens. At the secondary level, history lessons are directly related to citizenship education. With history curriculum the opportunities related to citizenship education could be offered such as learning different people and cultures; analyzing the diversity of social perspectives at national and international levels; developing the ability to assess the scientific and moral dimension of the study of history; learning democratic processes; monitoring the development of human rights .The possibility of teaching history as an effective tool for the development of national consciousness, patriotism, good and conscious citizenship is an important area of debate in the western world. In Turkey, the secondary level of citizenship education programs emphasizes the crucial elements of citizenship education such as identity, cultural and historical heritage, knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. In this study, the importance of history curriculum in terms of citizenship education would be evaluated with examples from Turkey and western countries such as the USA, The UK and Canada.
