Abstract

In this paper, I analyze the critiques of liberal democracy in political theory. The assertion that arguing the crisis of liberal democracy is introduced in the context of modernism and liberal democracy critics strengthened since 20th century’s second half. Areas related to legitimacy such as the ability to represent or participation capacity of liberal democracy are questioned in those critiques. Some of the critical approaches on liberal democracy suggested new strategies rethinking about participation, public sphere, representation and citizenship. It was an attempt of theorization asserting that deepen modern democracy’s ideals of equality and liberty. The so-called radical democracy project and strategies are composed of different theoretical formulations including such as deliberative democracy and agonistic pluralism. In this paper, I try to classify those new theories, examining critical arguments towards liberal democracy.
