Abstract

Hüseyin Anka Özkan was born in Domurcalı Village of Lalapaşa Town, Edirne, in 1908 and lived in Edirne until the completion of his high school education. Özkan was the first person in Edirne, who worked on statues and at the same time, he was the first sculptor from Edirne, who received sculpting education at Academy. Although he was from Edirne, he has only two small-sized statues in Edirne and that it is not exactly known, when and how these statues arrived to their final destination; i.e. the Faculty of Architecture of Trakya University. It is a well-established fact that the childhood and youth periods have an impact on the artists towards determining the fundamental qualities of their art. The present article aims first to outline Özkan’s life story prior to academic art education in order to examine its effect on his art and then suggest the basic attributes of his statues in Edirne. The article aims to reach general conclusions as regards his artistic approach in the light of the information acquired through the foregoing two essential sources of information. Another aim of the article is to emphasize the importance and significance for Edirne of those two statues in order to underscore what can/should be done in Edirne for this famous sculptor, who is, perhaps, one of the most renowned and important historical/cultural personalities in Edirne..
