Abstract

The religion which owes its existence to the search for meaning of people has attracted the attention of ordinary people throughout history and it has been a subject that philosophers have been focusing on. Man is equipped with the desire to understand and recognize the universe in which he lives. In this sense, he has been looking for an authority to answer his questions. There is no doubt that religion has the ability to answer these questions for the majority of people. However, this does not mean that all people accept it as an institution. Arthur Schopenhauer, who sees the world as a design at this point, does not knock the door of a God when he tries to understand it. For the Schopenhauer, the way to get ride of the unending world of agony and pain and the way to discover an aswer to the unkwness of existence is not through a supernatural power. The concept of will, which he sees as the essence of things, is one of the most conspicuous elements of the philosophical system. In this article, we will try to understand and analyze the role of Schopenhauer in his quest for meaning in religion. In addition, we will try to explain the philosophy of the “will” which is an important part of its philophy.
