Abstract

Glass, as a material shaped by an artist, is a product which is created using a variety of techniques. In this study, the possibilities of uniting particular metals with glass at high heat has been researched in order to develop creative methods for glass artists. Regarding the method, open-mould techniques and fusion techniques were used. Regarding the glass, soda-lime glass, Schott Artista series clear glass, and studio glass were used. The non-iron metals that were used were aluminum, lead, tin, copper, brass, and nickel-chrome. With the goal of uniting the materials into the same structure at high heat, the physical properties were researched with emphasis on their thermal expansion properties in order to evaluate their compatibility with one another. In the studies performed, care was taken to ensure the metals used would be a beneficial addition to the glass designs in regards to its conceptual and decorative factors. The results of the glass and metal being fired together were evaluated based on the clarity, colour, and texture of the glass, and the materials’ compatibility with one another.
