Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the personal opinion about karate referees in Turkey in karate-do sports regarding unsporting behavior. Like in all sports branches, in karate which holds the virtue of philosophical sportsmenship, the desire to win might lead to unsporting behavior of athletes, coaches and spectators. The detection of unsportsmanlike behavior by the referees is very important in this context. Scanning model and purposeful sampling method were used in the study. The sample consists of 112 karate arbitrators with 2017 visas. As a data collection tool, “Personal Information and Opinion Form ” was used by adapting to the karate-do branch. The percentage (%) and frequency (f) methods were applied to analyze the personal characteristics and opinions of the referees. In the research, the frequency of unsporting behavior faced by the referees according to the settlements, region, success ranking, championship type, match score, match moment, championship moment, categories, sports life period, gender and age groups were determined. In this context, it was concluded that the personal opinions of the karate referees on unsporting behaviors varied.
